Through a partnership with World Relief Seattle, Ably® will be financially supporting World Relief’s Economic Empowerment Initiatives by donating 15% of all sales from March 1st - 14th. These programs provide relief for immigrant families and largely support women immigrants and small business owners, meeting women on their own terms and empowering them to dream up their own take on economic freedom.
World Relief Seattle helps resettle refugees and build a welcoming community for all immigrants in vulnerable situations. Women, in particular, face enormous barriers to integration and economic empowerment. They carry much of the responsibility for childcare and have lower English language skills, literacy, and digital literacy when they are. Despite many being raised to believe they could not work outside of the home, 24% are the head of their household.
World Relief Seattle's Economic Empowerment Initiatives aim to increase access to support and remove these barriers.
The refugee Women’s Sewing Class benefits women like Mursal. Mursal arrived as a refugee from Afghanistan in 2017 with little English, limited work experience, and twin toddlers at home. With limited resources to attain employment, Mursal participated in World Relief Seattle's sewing-based English class, giving her ownership over her economic future. She both began work at an apparel design company and picked up sewing projects she could complete at home.
World Relief Seattle’s community garden, Paradise Parking Plots, was created to provide community for refugees. When asked what they really needed, refugees said ‘community’. The community garden has led to opportunaties to generate additional income, as women who garden here will have access to a commercial teaching kitchen, the first of its kind in the region, especially powerful for women entrepreneurs in food-based businesses.
Refugees are two times more likely to start businesses than American-born populations. Accessing capital, social networks, and communication tools to be successful is a greater barrier for women immigrant entrepreneurs. World Relief Seattle's entrepreneurship academy surrounds existing and emerging businesses with language appropriate resources, helps them secure funding, and creates access to business networks.
At its core, Ably® is dedicated to protecting people and the planet, which is why Ably® has partnered with World Relief Seattle to support the advancement of World Relief’s programming for women and families, and by sharing its global platform to help increase World Relief’s visibility around the world.
